How Dupont's CoolMax Fabric Works - Pealing Off the Layers for Performance
By Stephanie Lyster

It really doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, CoolMax fabric will enhance any performance from an everyday activity to extreme sports. Often when people think about performance apparel they think of mountain climbers or adventure racers, however this fabric has benefits for everyone. This performance apparel has been gaining popularity over the last decade due to continuous innovation and improvement. Dupont Textiles & Interiors now known as Invista and a subsidiary of DuPont is the largest integrated fibers company in the world. They developed CoolMax in 1986 as the first fabric to have a moisture management system. Sounds complicated? Well its not.

Inside CoolMax - What is it and how does it work?

CoolMax fabric removes moisture away from the skin and transfers it through to the surface. That’s it. That is the short definition of a moisture management system. How does this happen? CoolMax was created using four channel polyester fibers that are weaved together in cross sections to allow air to flow through the fabric. The term used to describe the evaporation of moisture is called ‘wicking’.

Wicking its Way to Victory

What does all of this mean? There is a list of benefits for CoolMax fabric but there is one truly unique quality that makes it stand out from other performance clothing. CoolMax does not use chemically treated fabrics to create the moisture management system, instead the performance is built in due to the way it is constructed as described above. Other performance clothing using chemically treated fabrics will wash away and deteriorate over time making them less effective. There are physical and psychological benefits. Listed below are the other substantial benefits of the CoolMax breathability and quick drying quality.

From the everyday to the extraordinary

There are three types of classifications for CoolMax product lines.

CoolMax Everyday

This is casual wear that is soft, lightweight, breathable and most of all comfortable. This line has allowed everyday clothing to be adaptable to changes in temperature and moisture levels on our bodies.

CoolMax Active

This line was created to enhance performance for any activity regardless of the climate. This clothing was designed to be cooler for the active lifestyle and it has the ability to wick away sweat and moisture to regulate body temperature.

CoolMax Extreme

Extreme athletes benefit from this technologically advanced product line because of its advanced moisture management system. It not only has the ability to reduce skin temperature but it also can decrease an athlete’s heart rate and assist in maintaining hydration.

Comparing the Ordinary

The combination of CoolMax’s moisture management system and its breathability is a winning combination when compared to other fabrics like cotton, nylon, wool and spandex. CoolMax has the fastest drying time, and the most efficient movement of moisture from the skin and overall breathability. Cotton is a breathable fabric but it does not wick moisture away from the skin instead it absorbs it leaving the fabric damp. Nylon will trap moisture and prevent airflow. It is best used with other fabrics and its claim to fame is its washability. Spandex is known for its ability to maintain shape and not for its ability to stay dry, spandex will absorb moisture. Lastly, wool can absorb a large amount of moisture and keep you warm you will not stay dry for long. None of these other fabrics have the ability to help regulate body temperature or keep you dry with the same performance as CoolMax.

Innovation Helps Aging Women

If you have ever had the opportunity to be around a women who is suffering from menopause you would know that it is unpleasant and characterized by intense heat flashes. CoolMax is being used by HotMama Sleepwear that is created by HotCool Wear to produce a sleepwear line that has the capability to wick sweat away and keep women dry. This truly is an innovative market niche that was in desperate need for a solution to an uncomfortable nights sleep.

Enlistment Made Easier

The Military has also taken advantage of the many benefits of CoolMax fabrics to ensure soldiers can perform to their maximum abilities. The moisture management system and excellent breathability in this fabric gives soldiers the advantage over long periods of time keeping them dry and cool in training and in combat. This has resulted in increased energy levels for better endurance and decreased heart rate for better concentration.

Washability is a benefit that is least often spoken about. It is an important attribute especially for the military where lightweight, durable apparel that can withstand constant cleaning is important. Another advantage both industry and individuals is that CoolMax fabric allows you to save energy and protect the environment. The quick dry lightweight fabric virtually eliminates the need for the dryer and perfect when traveling.

Who is buying CoolMax

CoolMax is a diverse product. You probably don’t realize it but next time you are out shopping you will. They have created product lines for everyone, men, women and youth to accommodate a large range of activities. Their product lines include shirts, pants, undergarments, hats, gloves, socks and backpacks.

Since 1986 DuPont’s CoolMax fabric has changed the performance of everyday people and performance athletes. The physical benefits are the most notable and constantly spoken about, however it is important to remember the psychological ones as well. Imagine if you were engaged in intense activity where you were hydrated and cool. It is safe to say you would have more endurance and a better overall sense of wellness.

Comfort VS Comfort

There really is no definitive way to define comfort. Is it a frame of mind? Could it just be a momentary feeling? Every person will have their own unique way in which they define comfort. So how do you create comfort and market it worldwide? You create a product that incorporates comfort with how people feel, how they performance and what psychological benefits they experience. This broad spectrum of advantages makes CoolMax applicable to any interpretation of comfort and most importantly it produces results. CoolMax has made its mark in this industry as a high performance fabric that has the fastest drying time and most sophisticated moisture management system. It truly has shown it can stand above the rest. Everyday there are new ideas for how this fabric can enhance people’s lives not only in athletics but in everyday activities, and it is continually on the rise.
