A brand is for the most part a name, term, design, symbol, or other feature that distinguishes one seller's product from those of others.  Like many other industries, in the apparel industry the brand that is used to identify clothing, footwear, and accessories is very important.  Branding is even used by fabric suppliers which is carried over into the garments.  For example, most people are familiar with copyrighted textile brands such as Polartec, Gore-tex, Cordura, etc., 

Brands are used in business, marketing, and advertising.  Branding is essentially a set of marketing and communication methods that help to distinguish a company from competitors and create a lasting impression in the minds of customers.  In our industry they may fall into specific segments or crossover into multiple areas.  For example, some international brands can be popular for men's, women's, and children's apparel.  However, other brands are specific for a single category such as womenswear only.

In the clothing industry their are different levels based on style, gender, function, etc. but their are also different levels based on quality and price.  Fashion brands are often distinguishable based on various price points.

Below are a few examples of categories used to distinguish between labels:

High fashion clothing brands are generally the brands currently showing at one of the world's four major fashion weeks, in Paris, Milan, London, and New York.  This is most often haute couture.
