Federated Department Stores' employees in divisions nationwide joined together last month to donate more than 1 million pounds of food to benefit the country's hungry children. The donation was part of the company's fourth annual "Bag Hunger" campaign, a national employee volunteer project.

Through Federated's national Partners in Time volunteer program, employees in 200 cities organized food collections in an effort to "Bag Hunger" for children. Since the project began in 1998, Federated volunteers have collected food to provide about 4,000,000 meals. This year's 1 million pounds of food is valued at $530,000, according to Cincinnati-based Free Store/Food Bank.

Divisional chief financial officers take on the additional roles of "Chief Food Officers" for this effort, challenging their divisions to beat prior year's totals by the highest percentage. To reward their efforts, the Federated Department Stores Foundation gives $10,000 in the name of the winners to local non- profit hunger-relief agencies.

"Bag Hunger is just one of thousands of projects we develop each year as employee volunteers at Federated," said Karen Hoguet, Federated senior vice president and chief financial officer. "Our company has a long history of giving back to our communities, in both time and contributions. In addition to providing food to 'Bag Hunger,' our employees also gave time to hunger relief agencies, packing, sorting and distributing food, as is true to the Partners in Time mission."

Since 1989, Federated's award-winning employee volunteer program, Partners in Time, has grown to include all 13 store and support divisions, while giving nearly 600,000 hours of service to communities from coast to coast. To "Bag Hunger," each division's store and support locations -- more than 450 in all -- partnered with local hunger relief organizations which impact their own home communities.
