Robin Anson, editorial director of Textiles Intelligence, has been invited to speak at the Technology Seminar on functional fabrics at Interstoff Asia Spring 2004 on Thursday, March 25, 2004. The theme of his presentation will be: "Performance apparel markets: bridging the gap between technical textiles and fashion".
Just 20 years ago, apparel could be functional or fashionable - but not both. Since the 1990s and the development of innovative technical fabrics, however, functionality has played an increasingly important role in fashion design.
Fashion designers have embraced high performance fabrics, creating collections that make a statement not only about fashion but also about lifestyle. Consumers too have welcomed performance features such as moisture management and thermal regulation, shunning conventional materials that do not live up to their growing expectations about the function of clothing.
High-tech materials which were once prohibitively expensive are now in widespread use. This is enabling apparel manufacturers to differentiate their products in an over-crowded market place.
Furthermore, the lines between fashion and function are becoming increasingly blurred. Today, sportswear combines performance and function with aesthetics and fashion. Major sportswear companies are now crossing the once impermeable divide into the world of haute couture, producing their own collections which are designed to appeal as much to the fashion-conscious casual wearer as to the sports enthusiast.
