A jacket is a mid-stomach–length garment for the upper body.  A jacket typically has sleeves, and fastens in the front or slightly on the side. A jacket is generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat, which is outerwear.  Some jackets are fashionable, while others serve other purposes such as protective clothing.  Jackets come in many different forms and fabrics including, blazers, flak jackets, chef's jacket, dinner jacket, leather jacket, windbreaker, varsity jacket, reversible jacket, rain jacket, etc.  Some are meant for fashion and other types of garments have various functions.

Vintage clothing is a generic term for garments originating from a previous era. Therefore, a vintage jacket is one that is from a different era.  So, what is an era?  An era is a span of time marked by character, events, changes on earth, etc. When used in science, for example geology, an era denotes a clearly defined period of time of arbitrary but well-defined length.  When used in social history, eras may for example denote a period of some monarch's reign. In colloquial language, eras denote longer spans of time, before and after which the practices or fashions change to a significant degree. When era is extended to a calendar system, it is known as a calendar era.

Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is considered vintageRetro, short for retrospective, or "vintage style" usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Reproduction, or repro, clothing is a newly made copy of an older garment.  Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion.  Learn the difference between vintage fashion and antique clothing.

The word jacket comes from the French word jaquette. The term comes from the Middle French noun jaquet, which refers to a small or lightweight tunic.  In Modern French, jaquette is synonymous with jacket. Speakers of American English sometimes informally use the words jacket and coat interchangeably.  However, their is technically a difference between jackets and coats.
