Wool is the textile fiber obtained from sheep and other animals.  Boiled wool is a special type of fabric primarily used in berets, scarves, vests, cardigans, coats and jackets. Created by a mechanical process using water and agitation, shrinking knitted or woven wool or wool-blend fabrics, compressing and interlocking the fibers into a tighter felt-like mass.  A jacket is a mid-stomach–length garment for the upper body.  A jacket typically has sleeves, and fastens in the front or slightly on the side. A jacket is generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat, which is outerwear. Some jackets are fashionable, while others serve as protective clothing.

A sport coat (or sports coat) also called a sports jacket (British English), less commonly known as a sportcoat, is a jacket for men. Though it is of a similar cut and length to a suit jacket, a sport coat is less formal and is designed to be worn on its own without matching trousers. Styles, fabrics, colors and patterns are more varied than in most suits.  This type of jacket is often made from wool.  Cashmere wool, usually simply known as cashmere, is a fiber obtained from cashmere goats and other types of goat. This type of wool is costly and luxurious.  If you want a very fine jacket, you can shop for cashmere jackets.  This fiber makes a very nice sports jacket.

A pea coat (or pea jacket, pilot jacket) is an outer coat, generally of a navy-colored heavy wool, originally worn by sailors of European and later American navies.Pea coats are characterized by short length, broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, often large wooden, metal or plastic buttons, and vertical or slash pockets.  References to the pea jacket appear in American newspapers at least as early as the 1720s, and modern renditions still maintain the original design and composition.

A bridge coat is a pea coat that extends to the thighs, and is a uniform exclusively for officers and chief petty officers. The reefer is for officers and chief petty officers only, and is identical to the basic design but usually has gold buttons and epaulettes. Only officers wear the epaulettes.

A Harrington jacket is a lightweight, waist-length jacket made of cotton, polyester, wool or suede. Designs often incorporate traditional Fraser tartan or checkerboard-patterned lining.

The bed jacket is lightweight jacket worn to cover the chest, shoulders and arms while sitting up in bed. Its short length and cape-like cut allows for it to be put on (or removed) while reclining. Originating in the 19th century as a garment worn for warmth, bed jackets could be home-made from practical materials such as knitted wool, flannel or cotton, or more expensive garments designed to exchange a measure functionality for elegance. They were popularized in 1930s.

Do you know the difference between a coat and jacket?

Historical reference to different types of wool jackets:

From World War I up until 1940 soldiers in the United States Army wore a wool four pocket service coat as the outer garment of their uniforms, both in garrison and in the field. This followed the general pattern adopted by most major armies of the world, but proved to be rather impractical. At the end of the 1930s, the Army moved to adopt a new outer garment that was intended to be more utilitarian and provide better protection in combat.

Telogreika or vatnik is a Russian kind of warm cotton wool-padded jacket. It was also a part of winter uniform first issued by the Red Army during World War II.

A jupe referred to a loose-fitting wool jacket or tunic for men.  The term has now disappeared but was used up until the 19th century.  Usage of this meaning of jupe for menswear became restricted to "jupe panels" in jackets.

A donkey jacket in the United Kingdom is a medium length work jacket for men, with about 5 large buttons down the front, and is typically made of unlined black or dark blue thick Melton woollen material, with the shoulders back and front reinforced and protected from rain with leather (or later PVC) panels. It is untailored at the waist so it hangs down straight from the shoulders. The front vertical edges fall straight and are squared-off at the bottom edge which is also straight horizontally with no vent at the back. In length it reaches 3 or 4 inches below the crotch area. It has no lapels and buttons tightly up to the neck with a broad and stiff up-turnable collar to protect the neck from wind, cold and wet weather. It is thus well suited to outdoors work in demanding conditions.

A hacking jacket is a wool sports coat for casual riding, often of tweed and traditionally 3 buttoned with a single vent.

A Norfolk jacket is a loose, belted, single-breasted jacket with box pleats on the back and front, with a belt or half-belt. The style was long popular for boys' jackets and suits, and is still used in some (primarily military and police) uniforms. It was originally designed as a shooting coat that did not bind when the elbow was raised to fire.
