About the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative

"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." -Sir Isaac Newton

Intellectual innovation - ideas in whatever form - is the result of a chain reaction that may happen immediately or last for centuries.  People typically live in communities, not in isolation.  In a similar fashion, so do ideas.  These communities of information must be passed down from one generation to the next and spread from one society to another.  In an effort to pass on the torch of research and continual learning, the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative was born.

The Apparel Search Educational Co-operative is a place to share ideas, research, and educational studies that have relevance to the international Apparel & Textile community.  Via the internet, we share educational material at a global level.  The collected Educational material is not limited to specific clothing silhouette, fiber content or fabric classification.  The co-operative is intended to cover “all” segments of clothing, fashion and textiles.  No aspect is too minor for inclusion.  The goal is to display research data all the way from fiber creation to the completed garment and beyond (when we say "beyond", we refer to the  recycling of materials).

Has your institution or association conducted research that will help improve the ability to recycle materials such as fabric, buttons, zippers, hangers etc.?  Have you strived to create environmentally friendly components for clothing production?  Do you have a method to manufacture safer machinery for factory workers?  If so, please share your knowledge so that other scientists / educators can learn from and expand upon your research.  Sharing knowledge is self fulfilling as well as beneficial to society as a whole.

The co-operative is designed for the sharing of education and scientific study as it relates to clothing and textiles.  Primarily, the material is displayed so that it can be easily utilized by members of the Apparel & Textile industry.  However, the educational material is well suited for students or other people interested in enriching their lives through education.  Access to the material is not limited by ones location, culture or society (although, you must have access to the internet).  Your are welcome to freely view the information or contribute to the studies.

If you are an educator or industry association, please assist the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative.  This is a free organization that is created for the purpose of education.

What type of research or educational material is appropriate for submission?

Any form of educational material that is relevant to fashion, apparel, clothing or textiles.  The co-operative is interested in educating the apparel industry as well as the general public regarding "all" facets of clothing and textiles.  The goal is to display both elementary information as well as the most complex studies.  If you have a simple definition or a complicated scientific formula, it is welcome at the educational co-operative.

The goal is to share all forms of your knowledge & experience with the international community.

Although the information collected is generally geared toward adults, we would be happy to develop a special section for children if you have appropriate educational materials.

In addition to written data, the educational co-operative is capable of uploading images... If you have photos of fibers, fabric types etc., we would be happy to add them.

How does our educational institution donate educational material?

Providing information is a relatively simple process.  Firstly, you can contact us to inform us that you are interested in aiding the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative program.  Then we will discuss with you the best method in which to transmit the educational material.  Typically, we prefer to receive correspondence via e-mail or disk.  This helps reduce the time it will take to place the information into an adequate format for uploading onto the internet.  If necessary, we can receive information via the mail.  However, this will require that we re-type the data.  In addition to time delay, this method creates risk of typographical error. Although we prefer to receive information by e-mail or disk, we are capable of receiving the data in any format that is convenient to you.

Why donate Educational Information?

When you decided to become an educator or member of an industry association, had your decision been based on financial reward?  Possibly, the decision was based on your desire to “learn” or to “educate others”.  Essentially, the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative is a method in which you can share your experience with other educators (and active learners).  Possibly, your information or experience can be expanded on by future generations.  Wouldn’t it by nice for our children and grandchildren to wear clothing that is produced in a safe and environmentally friendly manner?  Would you like members of your family to have access to clothing soft and breathable as cotton and be 100% resistant to flame?  Are you tired of having buttons, zippers, hangers buried in the soil of our landfills?  You may think that sharing of knowledge is not important.  However, your research may spawn future achievements..  No research should go to waste.  Share your studies with others.  It will cost you nothing but your time to send the e-mail.

Have ALL universities listed on the Apparel Search provided information to the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.  However, we are still happy to list any education facility that is relevant to apparel or textiles.  Even if the university is not directly contributing to the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative, they are still working for the betterment of Apparel & Textile studies.  Therefore, they are OK in our book.  As long as the education institution continues to support research then we will continue to support them by providing direct links to there web sites.   Anyway, the associations and universities that are truly interested in “education” will contribute to the program.

Can retired professors be added to the profile section?

The answer is absolutely YES.  You do not have to be active at a university.  However, it is important that you are still active in the apparel or textile community.  By being active, we would hope that you would contribute to the Apparel Search Education Co-operative with your time or prior research.  Even if you do not directly contribute to our co-operative, you can be a contributor to other associations or individuals requesting guidance in the area of textiles, fashion or clothing.

Corporate Responsibility

Educators should not necessarily be compelled to donate time or information to the educational co-operative.  However, as a corporation you should find it your duty to help expand the industry in which your make your profit.  Educators will educate due to their devotion to the material or the desire to educate others.  As a corporation (with capabilities and financing for research), you are obliged to share your findings with the educators and students of our international community.  If you have research that can educate a young student, or improve society’s quality of living by reducing material waste etc., you are obliged to share that knowledge.  Let’s not get trapped in selfishness as the medical industry often has done.  Why lock up the secrets that can lead to the cure of certain ailments or disease?  Is it fair to put a patent on a procedure that can benefit public health?  Hopefully the Apparel Industry does not go down a similar path.  Anyway, to make a long story short, you should share the data that you have generated while doing corporate research.  Do not let it get filed away in a dusty closet.  Share, share, share…

How does our school, university, training facility become listed?

Your educational facility or association must have an active educational program for apparel, textiles or fashion related studies.  If so, you can then fill out our Add Your Company form. Approximately 4 weeks after the completion of the form, you will be added to the directory.  On occasion, we close the Add Your Company form so that we can maintain the accuracy of the Apparel Search web site and to catch up on the listings.  If the form is temporarily closed, you can e-mail us the information about your educational program and we will see that you are listed accordingly.  Please provide as much information about your program as possible so that we can have your details properly added.

Can we add additional research data to an existing study?

Absolutely, we can make amendments to your previous submissions.  In addition, we can take your most current studies and add them to existing research that had been provided by other professors.  The goal of the Apparel Search Educational Co-operative is to broaden and update research as often as possible.  Through the sharing of information & experience, future studies and expansions can be accomplished.  It is our pleasure to receive continuous updates for modification and improvement of existing reports.

Do professors or educational institutions receive payment?

Sorry, this program is to promote learning, not finance.  The reason for the creation and maintenance of this co-operative, is to “educate” and stimulate the sharing of knowledge.  The payment for our effort, is the satisfaction of educating the world in regards to apparel and textiles.  However, on a positive note we can provide links to your web site next to the educational information that which you provide.  This will hopefully assist viewers with locating your fine education establishment or association.
