The fashion wants and needs of women who face challenges due to limited physical mobility are finally being met through a new crop of designers focusing on adaptive clothing. Addressing the growing niche segment resulting from medical breakthroughs and the expanding ‘boomer’ population, these designers will be seen as the pioneers of a new frontier in fashion. Meeting the needs of women and men who are part of today’s workforce and playforce, these designers have done their homework. Of notice among the very few adaptive clothing resources is Versa AccessWear, the newest of resources catering to the “forgotten fashionista.” Versa AccessWear’s initial pieces deliver a one-two punch for the active business woman, who demands a classic look without sacrificing style and comfort. Construction elements incorporate comfort fabrics with key functional design. Their trademarked Versecure® tabs ensure a comfort and confidence that takes the wearer from the boardroom to the bedroom. “Our initial line was featured in Chloe Magazine’s Dare to Change the World fashion shows this year, and we received great feedback from the models who wore the clothes, as well as from the audience. We are looking to reach out to the needs of the older adult, taking into consideration input from caretakers, while still delivering a fashionable garment,” Liz Callahan, designer at Versa AccessWear states. “We look forward to the day when adaptive clothing will be featured in mainstream department stores and boutiques,” she added. In August, Versa AccessWear was added to the Shop for a Cure page of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation’s website. “Versa AccessWear’s commitment to giving back to the community we serve is a huge part of our company mission and vision,” Callahan states. In addition to the adaptive clothing offered, Ms. Callahan has also designed t-shirts and hand-painted/stamped scarves that reflect Versa AccessWear’s mission to encourage support and funding of research dedicated to the treatment and cure of spinal cord injuries and diseases.
