Della is a line of bags and accessories by Los Angeles-based costume designer and wardrobe stylist, Tina Tangalakis, which are hand-made from fabrics purchased locally in Ghana. They are exclusively constructed by seamstresses in the village of Hohoe, Ghana.  These women have the added incentive of being taught about micro-financing, developing savings, and the art of entrepreneurship. Della is not a charity, but an organization dedicated to empowering women through business and stimulating Ghana’s economy.

“This is a glamorous accessory for summer. You can dress up anything with a small, well-organized bag,” says Tangalakis of the Della clutch bag.

The Della Summer 2011 collection features clutches in three limited edition fabrics, which were not only purchased in Ghana, but that were manufactured in the country as well. These striking geometric patterns are sophisticated, yet fun. As with most summer accessories, the Della clutch is bold and playful, while still being practical. Each clutch features a divided interior, a built in sleeve for a check book, a sleeve for business or credit cards, and a zippered change pocket.

Every Della product proudly carries a tag that is signed by the seamstress that made it. The purchase of each bag allows for the addition of seamstresses to the entrepreneurial program in Ghana, and allows the buyer to “carry change”; a phrase with a profound double meaning that aptly describes the heart of the line.
