The upgraded solution features a new Subcontractor Module that parses orders to an apparel producer's vendors and enables the vendors to supply data back to the manufacturer in a format required by the DoD. The module tracks a host of data for each subcontractor, including contract size, the quantity of finished goods and the quantity of goods remaining to be produced.
ItemSight's ability to supply data with 100% accuracy and in compliance with DoD RFID requirements provides a monetary benefit to users.
The DoD has a rating system that rewards companies that submit data accurately and in accordance with their RFID requirements, said Mike Shabet, Avery Dennison global sales manager. The reward is faster payment. Plus, a higher ranking in the rating system shows the company in a more favorable light for the awarding of future contracts.
Tori Turcone, a spokesperson for The Brickle Group, which uses the ItemSight solution, reports that her company has never before been paid this quickly from the DoD. ItemSight has totally automated the process, she adds.
The cost-efficient ItemSight solution consists of multifunctional and scalable ItemSight software, a Psion Model 7525C handheld scanner, a docking station, a three-year service contract on hardware, and pre-encoded, pre-serialized RFID carton and pallet labels. The labels come with an Avery Dennison certificate of conformance, a document mandated by the QAR [Quality Assurance Representative].
For companies wanting to print and encode their own RFID labels, Avery Dennison makes available its AP5.4 RFID label printer and LMS software. According to Shabet, certain apparel makers with large volume RFID labeling requirements are producing the labels in house.
Point Blank Body Armor, Inc. is just one example of a company that has elected to produce its own labels, Shabet says. Avery Dennison supports their in-house production with technical and maintenance services.
ItemSight
ItemSight software components are installed in each user's PC and hand-held scanner. In operation, ItemSight users access contracts and orders via PC from the Virtual Item Manager Apparel Research Network Supply Chain Automation Process (VIM ASAP), the application developed by Modulant for DoD apparel and textile order management. ItemSight is unique in that it is the only system on the market that verifies the items picked and packed to the carton according to the actual contract, and communicates directly with VIM ASAP.
Orders are then downloaded into the handheld scanner, which is used to capture and log RFID data from items as they are picked from shelves and racks.
Generic RFID labels are applied to cartons and/or pallets and the handheld verifies the pick and records the RFID data. Pallets are than shipped at times and to locations specified by the DoD contract. The user then uploads the data via docking station to the PC where it is formatted to meet requirements for compliance and submission to the DoD. The apparel manufacturer can then supply a completed record to the DoD in full accordance with all compliance requirements.
