Since 1952, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early and offer promotional sales.  This is obviously important to the fashion industry because it is the time of year that a great deal of clothing, footwear, and fashion accessories are sold to consumers.
