Before we learn about the Internet of Fashion (IoF) we need to have a basic understanding regarding the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects such as devices, vehicles, buildings and other items that are embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

These devices (things) collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other devices.

In other words, the internet of things is multiple objects that are connected to one another via technology so that they can communicate with one another and share information.

A growing portion of IoT devices are created for consumer use. Examples of consumer applications include connected car, entertainment, home automation (also known as smart home devices), quantified self, connected health, and appliances such as washer/dryers, robotic vacuums, air purifiers, ovens, or refrigerators/freezers that use Wi-Fi for remote monitoring.  The most important example of IoT would be wearable technology.

OK, now we are getting to the Internet of Fashion (IoF).

According to Apparel Search on October 28, 2017, "The Internet of Fashion is clothing, footwear, or fashion accessories that has the capability of collecting and sharing data".

Fashion and technology has enabled innovation through data intelligence which has led to many fabulous breakthroughs.  What we wear now can have more of a purpose than simply keeping us warm and dry.  Wearable fashion embedded with technology has many beneficial attributes.  Wearable technology is expanding its scope each year and with a more and more rapid rate of improvement.

Smart clothing is where electronics merge with textiles to create fashionable, functional, comfortable solutions to meet your everyday needs.  If these clever clothes share data they become part of the Internet of Fashion universe.

Do your sneakers tell you how far you have run today?  They should be able to tell you much more.

They should probably be able to show you a chart of what you have done every day since the first day you put them on your feet.  They should even be able to let you know how many days they sat in your closet just waiting for you to put them on.  Do your sneakers tell you how many times you wore your favorite shorts at the same time you wore your sneakers?  If yes, your closet storage system or possibly your shorts are communicating as well.  Can you track how many times you wore your sneakers late at night when you snuck to your refrigerator to grab some ice cream?  Possibly your sneakers and refrigerator are both communicating to a particular device that is keeping record.

The IoF (internet of fashion) has many amazing possibilities for consumers, researchers, marketers, etc.

In addition to helping consumers IoF helps the fashion industry in many ways.  One example is the management of inventory.

The concept of the Internet of things became popular in 1999, through the Auto-ID Center at MIT and related market-analysis publications.  Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen by Kevin Ashton (one of the founders of the original Auto-ID Center) as a prerequisite for the Internet of things at that point. Ashton prefers the phrase "Internet for things." If all objects and people in daily life were equipped with identifiers, computers could manage and inventory them.  Besides using RFID, the tagging of things may be achieved through such technologies as near field communication, barcodes, QR codes and digital watermarking.  RFID technology will continue to help the apparel industry manage inventory and other tasks.

"Things" are an "inextricable mixture of hardware, software, data and service".  Fashion is also a type of thing.  The internet of fashion things is in its infancy.  Apparel Search is anxious to see how this field continues to develop over the next few years.  Amazing things are coming VERY soon.

Fashion brands are starting to realize that 'connected' clothing is no longer just a concept and that Internet of Things (IoT) technology can already be applied in ways that enhance customers' experience of their products.  Fashion houses are already responding to consumer demand for instant access in the digital age.

Are you looking for a smart clothing products platform in the cloud that collects, manages and applies real-time data from smart products and smart packaging to drive IoT applications?  Well, it is time to search the internet and get started building fashion that can be part of the Internet of Things.

The IoT allows objects to be sensed or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human intervention.
