Tapestry is the first New York–based house of modern luxury lifestyle brands. The company’s portfolio includes the Coach, Kate Spade New York, and Stuart Weitzman.

Tapestry, Inc., a house of iconic accessories and lifestyle brands consisting of Coach, Kate Spade, and Stuart Weitzman, and Capri Holdings Limited, a global fashion luxury group consisting of Versace, Jimmy Choo, and Michael Kors, August 10, 2023 announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Tapestry will acquire Capri Holdings. Under the terms of the transaction Capri Holdings shareholders will receive $57.00 per share in cash for a total enterprise value of approximately $8.5 billion.

In October 2017 the Coach company announced that it was planning to rename itself as Tapestry, effective on October 31, 2017 (Halloween). The company’s ticker symbol will change from COH to TPR as well.

The corporate name is being changed mainly to reflect that the company’s expanding portfolio. Coach also owns boot maker Stuart Weitzman, which Coach bought in 2015, and fellow handbag maker Kate Spade, which Coach acquired in 2017.

Tapestry name was chosen partly because it’s a reflection of the history and heritage of the Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman brands. It’s also a play on fashion, “weaving the brands together to make something beautiful.”

By the way, "before" this company name was created in 2017 the word tapestry has been used in the apparel & textile industry.  Tapestry is a form of textile art, traditionally woven on a vertical loom. Tapestry is weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work, unlike cloth weaving where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible.
