O is a compact letter with an unusually wide spread. At one end sits Outerwear, the broadest category in this part of the guide: clothing worn outdoors or over other garments, from trench coats, pea coats and overcoats to denim and leather jackets, parkas, vests, ponchos and capes, in versions cut for women, men and children. At the other end sit single, sharply defined garments and shoes, each with its own construction story.
The footwear trio shows three different ways a shoe can be defined. Open-toe Shoes are defined by an opening: the exposed toe, in peep-toe pumps, heels, flats, booties and sandals. Over the Knee Boots are defined by height: a shaft that rises above the knee toward the thigh, a silhouette traced to the 15th century and turned into a fashion statement in the 1960s. Oxfords are defined by a closure: eyelet tabs stitched under the vamp, the closed lacing that makes them the standard dress shoe for formal and semi-formal wear.
Overalls complete the letter with the guide's clearest workwear-to-fashion story: a bib front on shoulder straps over trousers, built for laborers, farmers, miners and railroad workers, then adopted as a symbol of youth culture and, in lighter fabrics and tailored fits, as a fashion garment in its own right.
