Envisioned by Haley and Beau Lewis, a young husband and wife team, in
the fall of 2007, Bare Apparel was unveiled on-line in April/May of
2008. Finally, screenprinters and designers have access to washed and
distressed premium blank garments. The idea for the company came
when the team realized the hassle that designers had to go through in
order to get premium quality blank t-shirts and their lack of access to
resources for distressing and washing their garments.
“In talking to designers, I realized that they didn’t know how to get
their shirts washed or grinded. If they did know how, they just didn’t
have the industry contacts, or it just wasn’t economical for them to
work it out,” says Beau, the company’s CEO. “Smaller designers want to
offer the same kind of premium shirts as companies like Obey,
Affliction, or Ed Hardy and they want to be able to do things like
distress their garments or experiment with different kinds of softening
washes, like enzyme, acid, or sand washes.” Bare Apparel has found
a solution to this problem by offering blank shirts to consumers with
options like distressing and a variety of washes.
Getting Bare Apparel off the ground was no easy task for the husband and
wife team. “We had a learning curve, but we refused to take no for
an answer,” says Haley. “We were lucky because we had a good contact
inside the industry; but without him, the process would have been much
more challenging and complicated.” The company had to learn quickly
about coordinating services with vendors, negotiating prices, finding
good sources, and the importance of ensuring a quick delivery time.”
Beau adds, “We persisted through these challenges because we have a
vision for Bare Apparel. We are excited about using our creativity to
create a new kind of blank t-shirt, one that is going to allow designers
to make unique, premium garments.”
In the future, the company looks to expand to many kinds of apparel,
including a larger variety of shirt styles, hoodies, denim, tall sizes,
and a children’s line.
