Lands' End is a direct
merchant of traditionally styled clothing for the
family, soft luggage, and products for the home. They
offer products through their
catalogs, on the
internet and in their
inlet stores.
Their goal is to please their
customers with the highest levels of
quality and service in the industry, along with
an unequivocal ironclad guarantee.
Back in 1963, they
started Lands' End in a basement, along the river in
Chicago's old tannery district. They were
all sailors at that time, and their
business was selling (and sometimes making) racing
sailboat equipment, and duffle bags, and rainsuits and
some sweaters and other clothing.
When they
learned enough about the business to spread their
wings and grow a little, they
moved the company to the little town of Dodgeville in
rural Wisconsin.
The main reason that they are there is that Gary Comer fell in love with the gently rolling hills and woods and cornfields and being able to see the changing seasons. Equally or more important, they came to know what a remarkable group of people they were joining with in the community. As you see, it's a farm community, and their fellow workers were the sons and daughters of farmers and their families included a fine bunch of kids. They quickly found that they are the kind of people who get up mighty early in the morning, because they may have a cow or two to milk before coming to work (they are hard working people). When the Lands' End company first came to Wisconsin, they started small. But the business and the community have been good to them. And today their headquarters building is a good deal larger, both outside and in.
As a
direct merchant, they
work directly with mills and manufacturers,
eliminating the markups of middlemen.
They pass the savings on to their
customers, who shop directly with them
from home or office, by phone, mail, fax or Web. They
ship directly to their
customers, virtually anywhere in the world. In addition
to lower prices, their
direct merchant method of doing business makes shopping
simpler, faster and more convenient.
