Fashion Union

A union is something formed by uniting two or more things — a number of persons, states or organisations joined or associated together for some common purpose. A labor union, also called a trade union, is an organisation that represents the collective interests of workers, helping workers unite to negotiate with employers over wages, hours, benefits and other working conditions. A fashion union is a fashion industry union — and since fashion is closely related to textiles, clothing and textile unions fall into a single category here.

Why Unions Matter to Workers

Many people believe unions are helpful to employees for a clear reason: unions help set the standards for education, skill levels, wages, working conditions and quality of life for workers. Union-negotiated wages and benefits are generally superior to what non-union workers receive, and most union contracts provide more protections than state and federal laws. Labor unions represent workers in both the public and the private sector.

The slogans carry that case in miniature: all wealth is the product of labor; direct action beats inaction; labor, not capital, is the source of wealth. Fashion unions, like unions in all industries, have pros and cons, and the debate about them is part of the industry's history rather than a settled question.

Textile and Clothing Unions

Workers United is an American and Canadian union with over 100 years of history, descended from ACTWU, the ILGWU tradition and UNITE, now affiliated with SEIU — the Service Employees International Union, an organisation of two million members. The Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA) was an industrial union of textile workers established through the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1939, and merged with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America to become ACTWU in 1976 — the lineage that runs through modern garment unionism.

The Union Question in Modern Fashion

Modern fashion has moved much of its garment work across borders, which moved the union question with it: the workers sewing a brand's clothes may be organised, or prevented from organising, under another country's laws entirely.
