Stage Stores was the Houston retailer that brought moderately priced, name-brand apparel, accessories, cosmetics, footwear and home goods to small and mid-sized towns across America, trading under the Bealls, Goody's, Palais Royal, Peebles and Stage nameplates. The company traded on the New York Stock Exchange as SSI. In 2019 it bet the company on converting its department stores to the off-price Gordmans banner it had bought in 2017; the pandemic closed its stores mid-conversion, and Stage Stores filed for Chapter 11 on May 10, 2020 and liquidated all of its roughly 738 stores.
