Clip-on earrings are earrings designed to be worn without pierced ears. Instead of a post through the lobe, the earring is held on by a fitting that grips the earlobe - most commonly a hinged clip, a screw back that tightens gently, or a spring clip on an ear cuff style. The decorative front is identical to pierced earrings; only the fitting differs.

Types of Clip Fitting

The paddle clip is the classic: a hinged flat paddle snaps against the back of the lobe. The screw back, common on vintage earrings, lets the wearer tighten the fitting gradually, which many people find the most comfortable for heavy earrings. Modern silicone-padded clips and resin clips spread the pressure and are kinder for all-day wear.

Clip-ons were the standard earring fitting until ear piercing became widespread in the later twentieth century, so most vintage earrings are clip or screw back. Converters also exist that turn a pierced stud into a clip fitting, and many jewellers can convert modern earrings to clips on request.

Comfort and Security

Comfort depends on pressure spread over area: a larger, padded clip worn correctly should feel firm but not pinch. If a clip hurts within minutes, it is too tight or positioned on the cartilage edge rather than the fleshy lobe - reposition before adjusting. For valuable clip-ons, check the hinge tension regularly; a jeweller can tighten a loose clip before it costs an earring.

Finding Your Fitting

If you are new to clip-ons, try more than one fitting before deciding the style does not suit you. Many people who find a paddle clip uncomfortable get on well with a screw back, which can be set to exactly the pressure they tolerate, or with a modern padded clip that spreads the load. Position matters as much as pressure: the clip should sit on the fleshy centre of the lobe, not near its edge. For a long event, a useful test is to wear the earrings at home for an hour first. A fitting that is comfortable at the hour mark will usually stay comfortable all evening.

FAQs

Do clip-on earrings hurt?
A well-fitted clip should not hurt. Firm pressure is normal, pain is not - reposition the earring on the fleshy part of the lobe, or choose a padded or screw-back fitting.
Can pierced earrings be converted to clip-ons?
Yes. Jewellers can fit clip converters or replace the fitting, and simple slip-on converters work for many stud earrings without permanent alteration.
Are clip-on earrings secure?
A clip with good hinge tension is secure for normal wear. Check tension regularly and avoid clips for sport or swimming.
