An ear cuff is an earring in the form of a curved, open band that grips the outer edge of the ear. Most ear cuffs need no piercing at all: the band slides onto the thinnest part of the ear cartilage and is gently squeezed to hold in place. Ear cuffs let the wearer decorate parts of the ear - the helix and the conch - that would otherwise need a cartilage piercing.

Types of Ear Cuff

The simple band cuff is a plain or decorated C-shaped band worn on the helix, the outer rim of the ear. The conch cuff is a larger band that encircles the inner conch area, usually purely decorative and more visible. Some cuffs add chains that connect to a stud in the lobe, or stack several thin bands into one piece for a multi-cuff look from a single fitting.

Fit is everything. A cuff that is too loose falls off; too tight, and it becomes uncomfortable within minutes and can be lost when knocked. Good cuffs are made of slightly flexible metal so the opening can be adjusted once, carefully, to the wearer's ear, and then left alone - repeated bending weakens the metal.

How to Put On an Ear Cuff

Slide the cuff onto the ear at its thinnest point, usually partway down the outer rim, then work it gently into position and give it a very light squeeze. It should feel secure when you shake your head, without pinching. Remove it by sliding it back to the thin point rather than pulling it straight off, which can distort the band and scratch the ear.

Getting the Fit Right

Buy an ear cuff the way you would buy a ring: fit is the product. The opening should be wide enough to slide on at the thin part of the rim without force, and the band should hold with a gentle squeeze, not a hard one. If a cuff needs to be bent a long way to fit, it is the wrong size or shape for your ear, and repeated adjustment will work-harden and eventually snap the metal. Wear a new cuff around the house first. A cuff that survives an hour of moving, talking and brushing your hair without shifting or aching is fitted correctly; one that works loose in ten minutes is not.

FAQs

Do ear cuffs need a piercing?
Most do not. A standard ear cuff grips the edge of the ear by pressure alone, so it can be worn on unpierced ears. A few designs combine a cuff with a stud, and only the stud part needs a piercing.
Where on the ear is a cuff worn?
Usually on the helix, the outer rim, or around the conch in the middle of the ear. Small cuffs can also sit higher or lower on the rim.
How do I stop an ear cuff falling off?
Fit is the key: slide it on at the thinnest part of the rim, position it, and squeeze very gently. It should feel snug without pinching.
