Threader earrings are earrings made from a length of fine chain. At one end is a small solid bar or post that passes through the ear piercing; the chain is drawn through until it hangs in two lengths, one in front of the lobe and one behind. There is no butterfly back - the balance of the chain, and sometimes a small charm or stone at each end, keeps the threader in place.

Adjustable by Design

Because nothing fixes the chain at a set point, a threader can be worn many ways: evenly balanced, long at the front and short at the back, or drawn up so the front hangs just below the lobe. With multiple piercings, a single threader can even be woven through two holes. The ends are often finished with a small bar, bead, crystal or charm that stops the chain sliding fully through.

Threaders are among the lightest earrings made, which makes them comfortable for all-day wear, but the fine chain is delicate. It should be stored hanging or laid straight, never balled up, and pulled through the ear slowly - forcing a kinked chain through a piercing can tear both the chain and the wearer's patience.

Wearing Threaders Safely

Insert the bar end gently and draw the chain through slowly until the lengths suit you. Check in a mirror that the back length is not so long it will catch on a collar. Threaders are not ideal for sleeping, because the chain can work its way out or tangle in hair. Keep one threader per compartment in storage so the fine chains do not knot together.

Chain Quality and Ends

A threader is only a chain and its two ends, so both deserve inspection. The chain should be fine but not fragile - give it a very gentle pull and look for any link that is already opening. The bar that passes through the ear must be perfectly smooth, with no burr at its tip, because it goes through the piercing every time the earring is worn. Stoppers and end charms should be soldered, not merely squeezed on. If you wear threaders often, choose a slightly heavier chain weight than the finest available; the difference in look is small and the difference in lifespan is not.

FAQs

Do threader earrings need backs?
No. The chain is drawn through the piercing and stays in place by balance, with small bars or charms at the ends acting as stoppers.
Can a threader be worn through two piercings?
Yes. A longer threader can be woven through two lobe piercings, which is a popular way to style them on multiply-pierced ears.
Are threader earrings secure?
They are secure for normal daytime wear but can slide. They are best removed for sleeping, swimming and sport.
