A herringbone chain necklace is a flat chain built from many short, slanted segments laid side by side in a V pattern, like the bones of a herring. The segments are pressed together into a smooth, flexible ribbon of metal with no visible gaps, so a herringbone necklace reflects light in a continuous sheet and is often described as looking like liquid metal.

Construction and Character

Each segment is a small flat link, angled alternately left and right, and the rows are compressed so the surface is almost seamless. That construction gives the herringbone its famous drape - it pours around the neck and lies completely flat - but it also gives it its one weakness: the chain must not be bent sharply or twisted, because a kink in a herringbone is permanent and cannot be fully repaired.

Widths range from a few millimetres to a centimetre or more, and wider chains show the liquid effect best. Herringbone necklaces are worn plain, without pendants, because a pendant would crease the ribbon and spoil the flat line that is the whole point of the design.

Handling a Herringbone Chain

Treat a herringbone necklace gently: never fold it, never let it twist in a jewellery box, and store it laid flat in a long compartment or hanging. Put it on last and take it off first, keep it away from perfume and sprays, and if it develops a small kink, take it to a jeweller rather than trying to bend it back, which usually makes the damage worse.

Buying Without Regrets

Inspect a herringbone necklace more carefully than any other chain before buying. Lay it completely flat and look along its surface in good light: any kink, ripple or lifted segment will show as a break in the reflection, and damage of that kind does not polish out. Flex it gently into the curve it will make on the neck and check that it bends evenly. Ask how it should be stored and whether the seller will take it back if a kink appears immediately, and be honest about your habits - a herringbone is a poor choice for anyone who drops jewellery into a bag or box without thinking, however beautiful it looks in the shop.

FAQs

Why do herringbone chains kink?
Their flat segments are compressed into a smooth ribbon. A sharp bend or twist permanently deforms the segments, and the resulting kink cannot be fully flattened out.
Can you wear a pendant on a herringbone chain?
It is not recommended. The pendant's weight creases the flat ribbon and the bail can damage the segments. Herringbone necklaces are designed to be worn plain.
How should a herringbone necklace be stored?
Laid flat in a long, separate compartment, or hanging. Never coil it tightly or let it twist, and keep it separate from other jewellery.
