Lululemon, listed on NASDAQ under the ticker LULU, is a technical athletic apparel, footwear and accessories company for yoga, running, training and most other activities. Its own summary says it creates transformational products and experiences that build meaningful connections, unlocking greater possibility and wellbeing for all, and that it sets the bar in innovation of fabrics and functional designs. The company works with yogis and athletes in local communities around the world for continuous research and product feedback - a research method, not a slogan, that the founding story below shows was built into the business from its first room.
The first designs were made for women to wear during yoga. Through plenty of feedback from their guests, ambassadors and elite athletes, the company came to design for yoga, running, cycling, training and most other sweaty pursuits, for women and men. Note the vocabulary the historical record keeps: customers are guests, and the feedback loop names three distinct sources - the people who buy, the community ambassadors who teach and lead, and the elite athletes who stress-test. Each catches different failures in a fabric or a fit, which is why the technical claim in the opening paragraph rests on process rather than on any single miracle material.
The historical record adds a staffing fact that supports the same point: not to mention, their designers are athletes and sweat-minded people, too. A design team that trains in its own category notices waistband roll, seam placement and fabric behaviour under effort from the inside. Taken together - studio feedback, ambassador feedback, athlete feedback and athlete-designers - the profile describes a company whose innovation claim is organisational: it arranged its store, its community and its design desk so that product information kept flowing in, and then widened the category list only as that information justified it.
The vision for the store, as recorded, was to create more than a place where people could get gear to sweat in. The founders wanted to create a community hub where people could learn and discuss the physical aspects of healthy living, mindfulness and living a life of possibility. It was also important for them to create real relationships with their guests and understand what they were passionate about, how they liked to sweat, and to help them celebrate their goals. Retail as a meeting place is now a familiar strategy; this record keeps an early, explicit statement of it, attached to a single neighbourhood store.
Use this page for the recorded history: the 1998 Vancouver founding, the November 2000 Kitsilano store, the women-first yoga designs that broadened to men's and women's ranges across running, cycling and training, and the community-hub vision stated in the company's own terms. This rebuild asserts nothing beyond that record about later store counts, markets or results. For current products the official lululemon shop is carried in the References, and the company's own corporate site, named in the company's own text, is the authority for present-day corporate information.
