Ball gowns in floor, tea, knee and mini lengths

Length is the fastest way to read a gown's formality. Floor length — hem grazing the floor — is the black-tie standard, the most dramatic and traditional choice. Tea length (mid-calf) hits the sweet spot for semi-formal events: formal enough for evening, practical enough to dance in. Knee length keeps the ball gown's full skirt in a playful, retro package. Mini takes the volume short for parties where you want drama without the sweep.

Your choice should follow the invitation first and your comfort second. "Black tie" means floor length, full stop. "Semi-formal" or "cocktail" opens the door to tea and knee lengths. "Festive" or party dress codes welcome the mini. When in doubt, longer reads more formal — you can never be overdressed in a floor-length gown, but a mini at a black-tie gala will feel wrong.

Length and Proportion

Floor length elongates everyone but demands the right heel height — get the hem fitted wearing your event shoes. Tea length is famously tricky: it can shorten legs, so it works best with heels and a defined waist. Knee length is the friendliest for petite frames. Minis with full skirts need balance on top — keep the bodice simple to avoid a costume feel.
