An empire waist dress with a flowing skirt

The empire dress raises the waistline to just beneath the bust, letting the skirt fall long and loose from there. Named for the Napoleonic era that popularized it — think Jane Austen heroines — it is one of history's most flattering silhouettes, and it has never really left. The high seam elongates the lower body, which is why petite women and anyone wanting leg-lengthening drama reach for it.

This is also the most forgiving dress shape in existence: the skirt skims over waist, tummy and hips without touching them. Maternity wear borrows the empire line for exactly this reason. For the rest of us, it is the dress of hot weather and long dinners — nothing binds, nothing pinches. Choose fluid fabrics (chiffon, rayon, soft jersey) that drape from the bust seam; stiff fabrics defeat the purpose.

Necklines Matter Most

With the waist de-emphasized, the neckline carries the design. Scoop, V-neck and sweetheart shapes flatter most; a well-placed neckline draws the eye up and balances the column of fabric below. Avoid high, tight necklines unless you want a deliberately Regency look.

When to Wear It

Empire dresses shine at outdoor weddings, garden parties, maternity occasions and anywhere comfort matters as much as looks. For evening, choose luxe fabrics — silk chiffon, beaded bodices — to keep it from reading casual. Compare empire dresses on eBay and Amazon above.
