What are you planning to wear on the red carpet?  Were you actually invited???

Red carpet fashion refers to the outfits worn on the red carpet.  No, we don't mean the red carpet in your house.

The red carpet we are referencing is found at special events such as award ceremonies and movie premieres.  These are typically high-profile events with celebrities.

The clothes worn to award events such as the Oscars and the Golden Globes consistently receive an intense amount of worldwide media scrutiny.  Celebrities can very easily turn up on a "best dressed" or "worst dressed" list that can make or break their self worth for the week or beyond.

Red carpet events are important for the event organizers, celebrities, the media, fashion designers, retailers, consumers, etc.  In summary, they are VERY important to the fashion industry.

Red carpet fashion events

Having a dress, suit, shoe, jewelry, or fashion accessory featured on the red carpet, particularly one that attracts media attention, is very important to a designer or brand.  A high profile event can make or possibly break a fashion designers career.  These events are important to emerging designers as well as industry veterans.

In addition to designers, stylists can become popular if mentioned by a celebrity on the red carpet.

Does the red carpet actually have to be "red"?  Technically, a red carpet event should have a red carpet.  However, the term is often used for special events that don't actually have a red color carpet.

Prior to the 1990s, many celebrities chose their own red-carpet dresses, with the Oscars being remembered for some extraordinary and eccentric outfit choices.  Now it is a mix of decision making.  Some celebs pick their own clothes and others rely on wardrobe stylists, PR companies, agents, marketers, etc., to help make their decisions.

Red carpet gowns can most certainly make heads turn.
