Wholesale Closeout Clothing: Liquidation & Overstock Directory

Closeout & liquidation clothing — lots, pallets and truckloads below wholesale.

Closeout clothing is the fashion industry's surplus: overstocks, shelf pulls, customer returns, cancelled orders and last season's stock, sold at a fraction of wholesale to buyers who resell it through discount stores, flea markets, export channels and online marketplaces. It is bought by the lot, the pallet or the truckload rather than by the style, and the skill is in judging what a mixed load is really worth. The suppliers below deal in liquidation apparel; Apparel Search's own closeout liquidator listings, linked above the suppliers, have collected this trade for decades.

How Liquidation Clothing Is Sold

Liquidation apparel moves in four rough grades. Overstock and shelf pulls are new goods a retailer or brand could not sell - the cleanest loads, and the most expensive. Customer returns are new or nearly new but need inspection, cleaning and sometimes repair. Salvage and rag-grade loads are sold for what can be recovered from them. Within each grade, goods are sold as manifested lots (with an itemized list of what is in the load), unmanifested lots, or by the truckload for buyers with the warehouse space to sort.

Price follows information. A manifested lot from a named department store costs more per piece than a blind load, and is worth it to a small buyer who cannot absorb surprises. Truckload buyers pay the least per garment and do their own sorting, grading and channel-splitting - first quality to their stores, seconds to jobbers, damaged goods to the rag trade.

Before You Buy Your First Lot

Ask what the load actually is before asking the price: which retailer or brand it came from, whether it is manifested, the mix of men's, women's and children's goods, and whether sizes and seasons match your market. Confirm the selling unit (case, pallet or truckload), the freight cost to your door - liquidation freight can rival the goods' cost - and whether the supplier takes back misrepresented loads.

Start smaller than your ambition. A pallet or two reveals a supplier's honesty and your own sorting capacity at a survivable cost. Buyers who learn the trade on small lots graduate to truckloads with their eyes open; buyers who start with a truckload of the wrong season often leave the trade with it still in the warehouse.

Common Questions

What is the difference between closeout, overstock and liquidation clothing?

Closeout is a seller's final clearance of a line; overstock is simply more goods than the seller can move; liquidation is the bulk sale of surplus - closeouts, overstock, returns and salvage - usually by the pallet or truckload. In practice the terms overlap, and the grade and manifest matter more than the label.

What is a manifested lot?

A manifested lot comes with an itemized list - style, size, quantity and often original retail price - of what is in the load. Manifested lots cost more than blind lots but let a buyer value the goods before paying.

Who buys closeout clothing?

Discount and off-price retailers, flea market vendors, exporters shipping to overseas markets, online resellers, and charities and thrift operations buying in bulk. Each channel takes a different grade, which is why sorting is the core skill of the business.
