An athletic shoe is a name for a shoe designed for sporting and physical activities, and is different in style and build than a dress shoe. Originally used mainly during sports, today they are worn as casual footwear.

Sneakers (also known as athletic shoes, tennis shoes, gym shoes, runners, takkies, or trainers) are shoes primarily designed for sports or other forms of physical exercise, but which are now also often used for everyday wear. The term generally describes a type of footwear with a flexible sole made of rubber or synthetic material and an upper part made of leather or synthetic materials. Their are many different types of sneaker.

Running shoes come in a range of shapes suited to different running styles/abilities. Generally, they are divided by running style: the majority are for heel-toe joggers/runners which are further subdivided into 'neutral', 'overpronation' and 'underpronation'.  These are constructed with a complex structure of "rubber" with plastic/metal stiffeners to restrict foot movement. More advanced runners tend to wear flatter and flexible shoes, which allow them to run more quickly with greater comfort.  The average life expectancy of a running shoe is about 400 miles. When a shoe breaks down it's usually in the midsole not the outsole.  If you wear your shoes all the time and not just for running, you may get less time out of them.  Running shoes should not be used for lateral activities like basketball, step aerobics, tennis, racquetball or any other sport that causes you to pivot and cut from side to side quickly.  A “Cross-Trainer” (a sort of running/tennis shoe) would be a more suitable shoe for those types of activities.

Athletic shoes go by a wide variety of names.  Below are just a few.

Football boots, called cleats or soccer shoes in North America, are an item of footwear worn when playing football. Those designed for grass pitches have studs on the outsole to aid grip.  Modern "boots" are not truly boots in that they do not cover the ankle - like most other types of specialist sports footwear, their basic design and appearance has converged with that of sneakers.  Cleats or studs are protrusions on the sole of a shoe, or on an external attachment to a shoe, that provide additional traction on a soft or slippery surface. They can be conical or blade-like in shape, and made of plastic, rubber or metal. In American English the term cleats.

Dance Shoes: A wide variety of footwear is used by dancers. The choice of dance shoe type depends on the style of dance that is to be performed and, in many cases, the characteristics of the surface that will be danced on.  Pointe shoes, ballet shoes, Jazz Shoes, Tap Shoes, etc.

Women's Bowling shoes: Bowling refers to a series of sports or leisure activities in which a player rolls or throws a bowling ball towards a target. It is one of the major forms of throwing sports. In pin bowling variations, the target is usually to knock over pins at the end of a lane.  Special footwear is worn for this sport.  There's all types of bowling shoes made for different bowlers. Some are made just for right or left handed bowlers, some are made with interchangeable sliding soles and heels so your options are open on how you long or short you want your slide.

Women's Golf Shoes: Many golfers wear special shoes. The shoes can be spikeless or with spikes attached to the soles. The spikes can be made of metal or plastic (plastic spikes are also known as "soft spikes") designed to increase traction thus helping the player to keep his/her balance during the swing, on greens, or in wet conditions. In an attempt to minimize the severity of spike marks made on greens, many golf courses have banned metal spikes, allowing only plastic spikes during play.

Women's Track Shoes: Track spikes, or just spikes, are pointed protrusions usually made of metal, ceramic or plastic that are screwed into the bottom of most track and field shoes to increase traction and minimize the likelihood of slipping. The term "spikes" can also refer to track shoes featuring such protrusions. Spikes are similar to studs which are used for team sports, although generally smaller and with a sharp point.

Hiking boots are footwear specifically designed for protecting the feet and ankles during outdoor walking activities such as hiking. They are one of the most important items of hiking gear.  This type of athletic shoe has various varieties including trail shoes, trail hikers, mountain walking, mountaineering boots, etc.

If you are not sure which adventure you will be going on today, you may want to consider cross trainers.

It is important to learn about the components that make up the shoe.  So, when you are researching the perfect pair for the activities you have planned, you should investigate the soles, tongues, linings, upper, insoles, shanks, scree collars, padding, etc.  Also, pay attention to the materials.  Are you going to select a show made of real leather, synthetic, or another material?  This largely depends on the activity planned.  You need a different shoe for a cycling class verse a mountain hike.

You should also consider the type of shoe shape or style.
