Flutter Sleeve

A short, flared sleeve that moves like a wing.

A flutter sleeve is a short sleeve cut generously wide at the hem so that it hangs loose, flares away from the arm, and moves — flutters — when the wearer moves. It is set in at the shoulder like an ordinary sleeve, but instead of following the arm it is cut on a curve or a partial circle, which is what gives it its soft, wing-like drape.

Cut and Character

The flutter comes from geometry: the sleeve's outer edge is longer than the edge sewn into the armhole, so the extra length has nowhere to go but outward and downward in soft folds. Cut from fluid fabrics — chiffon, crepe, soft rayon, silk — the effect is airy and feminine; in crisper cotton it stands out in a more structured flare.

Flutter sleeves give coverage of the upper arm while staying cool and unrestricted, which is why they are a summer staple on blouses, dresses, and children's wear.

FAQs

Are flutter sleeves flattering on arms?
They are widely considered kind to upper arms: they provide coverage with movement and do not grip or cut in at the hem.
What fabrics suit flutter sleeves?
Soft, drapey fabrics flutter best. Stiff fabrics turn the same pattern piece into a standing flare rather than a flutter.
How long is a flutter sleeve?
Usually short — ending on the upper arm — though the style is sometimes extended to the elbow for a more dramatic drape.
