A signet ring is a ring with a flat, broad face - the bezel - engraved with a design such as a family crest, initials, a monogram or an emblem. The name comes from the Latin signum, a sign: for centuries the engraved face was pressed into hot wax to seal and authenticate documents, making the signet both a piece of jewellery and a personal signature.

From Seal to Style

A true seal engraving is cut in reverse, so the impression it leaves in wax reads correctly. Historic signets were worn on the little finger of the non-writing hand, ready to seal letters, and the designs were registered heraldic crests or personal devices. Gold was the classic metal, sometimes with the design cut into a hard stone such as bloodstone or carnelian set into the face.

Today most signet rings are worn as style rather than used as seals, and the face may be engraved, or left smooth and polished. The shape survives because it is balanced and unmistakable: a substantial ring with a flat oval, round or cushion-shaped table that reads clearly from a distance.

Which Finger, and Engraving Choices

Tradition puts the signet on the little finger, but modern wearers use the ring or index finger as well - there is no rule that matters more than comfort and proportion. If you plan to use a signet as an actual seal, tell the engraver: seal engraving is reversed and cut deeper than decorative engraving. For a purely decorative ring, surface engraving or laser engraving gives a cleaner, shallower finish.

Choosing a Signet Ring

Proportions make a signet ring. The face should be large enough for its engraving to read clearly, but not so large that it overhangs the finger on both sides, and the shoulders of the ring should taper comfortably toward the back of the band. If you intend to have the ring engraved later, buy a face with enough depth of metal - a thin, hollow face cannot take deep seal engraving. Hand engraving costs more than laser work but cuts a design with varied depth that catches light as the hand moves, which is why traditional signets still favour it for crests and initials.

FAQs

What finger is a signet ring worn on?
Traditionally the little finger of the non-dominant hand, where it was ready to seal documents. Today it is also commonly worn on the ring or index finger.
Can a signet ring still be used as a seal?
Yes, if it is seal-engraved in reverse and cut deeply enough. Most modern signets are decorative engraving and are not intended for wax.
What is engraved on a signet ring?
Traditionally a family crest or personal emblem. Modern signets carry initials, monograms, symbols or a plain polished face with no engraving.
