The Company Description of Its Time

The Burlington Coat Factory had changed the company name to Burlington Stores Incorporated, to remove some of the emphasis on the word 'coats' - the historical profile's opening note, and the key to the whole filing. The company started as a coat store but has expanded to t-shirts, dresses, pants, fragrances, makeup and much more. Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation operates as a retailer of branded apparel in the United States, providing in-season and fashion-focused merchandise such as ladies sportswear, menswear, coats and family footwear, as well as baby furniture, accessories, home decor and gifts, designer and fashion shoes, and baby clothing. The company was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Burlington, New Jersey.

Dated Snapshots: 2014, 2018 and the Bain Years

Historical Reference, 2018: Burlington Stores, Inc. operates as a retailer of branded apparel products in the United States, offering women's ready-to-wear apparel, accessories, footwear, menswear, youth apparel, coats and gifts, as well as baby, home and beauty products. As of February 3, 2018, it operated 629 stores, including an Internet store, in 45 states and Puerto Rico. The 2014 snapshot gives the earlier estate and its mechanics: more than 500 stores under the Burlington Coat Factory, Cohoes Fashions, Super Baby Depot, MJM Designer Shoes and Burlington Shoes nameplates; an average store size of approximately 80,000 square feet, more than twice the size of its largest off-price competitors' stores; and merchandise from over 3,500 vendors, focused on major nationally-recognized brands across women's, men's, youth, baby, footwear, accessories, home goods and coats.

The ownership sequence completes the record: in 2006 Burlington was acquired by Bain Capital in a take-private transaction; in 2008 Tom Kingsbury became President and CEO; in July 2012 the company received a $40 million incentive from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority under the GrowNJ program to build a new headquarters in Florence, adjacent to its existing headquarters, keeping it from moving out of state; and the company went public again in 2013. The vendor breadth point deserves emphasis, because it is the off-price model stated in numbers: 3,500 vendors feeding very large stores is how a chain can promise branded merchandise at 60-70% below department store prices as an everyday position rather than a sale event.
