The Company Description of Its Time

Jos. A. Bank is not just another menswear retailer - the historical record opens with the claim and then explains it. What makes them unique, the filing says, is also what attracted customers to their stores for over 100 years: a heritage of quality and workmanship, an extensive selection of beautifully made, classically styled tailored and casual clothing, and prices typically 20 to 30 percent below their competitors'. Add an expert staff of sales professionals who prize service and customer satisfaction above all, and you get the idea. Heritage, classic styling, a stated price advantage and service: four claims, each concrete, which together make up one of the most quotable profiles in this letter.

The 2014 Takeover: An Offer, a Counter-Offer, an Acquisition

The profile's dated news is a takeover story with a twist. On March 11, 2014, Men's Wearhouse Inc said it would acquire rival Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc for about $1.8 billion, ending a five-month saga that had started with Jos. A. Bank offering to buy its larger menswear rival. Read that sequence again, because it is the reason the story was famous: the smaller company bid first for the larger one, and five months later the larger one bought the smaller. The filing records the outcome plainly - Men's Wearhouse is the parent company - and the route to the Men's Wearhouse profile in this directory's M letter is carried on this page as linked in the historical record.

The 2015 summary in historical descriptions describe the combined parent: Men's Wearhouse is one of North America's largest specialty retailers of men's apparel, with 1,758 stores. The Men's Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Moores and K&G stores carry a full selection of suits, sport coats, furnishings and accessories in exclusive and non-exclusive brands; the Men's Wearhouse and Tux stores carry a limited selection; most K&G stores also carry a full selection of women's apparel; and tuxedo rentals are available in the Men's Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Moores and Tux stores. The parent also operates a global corporate apparel and workwear group - Twin Hill in the United States and Dimensions, Alexandra and Yaffy in the United Kingdom. Jos. A. Bank thus files twice over: as its own century-old menswear name, and as one banner inside a much larger men's specialty group.
