The Company Description of Its Time

The Talbots, Inc. is a leading national specialty retailer of women's, men's and children's apparel, shoes and accessories, offering its merchandise under the Talbots and J. Jill brands via stores, catalog and internet. The record filed here is dated in layers: an August 2012 update reporting Sycamore Partners' completed acquisition of the company, and beneath it the fiscal 2006 portrait of a retailer operating 1,364 stores in 47 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and the U.K. - 1,125 under the Talbots brand and 239 under J. Jill, acquired on May 3, 2006 - while circulating some 118 million catalogs worldwide.

The Store With the Red Door: 1947 to Sycamore

Talbots began in 1947, when Nancy and Rudolf Talbot opened their first shop in Hingham, Massachusetts, in a 17th-century colonial frame house - the store that became known by its welcoming red door. Direct mail followed in 1948, when Nancy launched the catalog business by distributing 3,000 black-and-white fliers to names taken from The New Yorker magazine. General Mills bought the company in 1973 and took it national; it passed to Japan's Aeon group in 1988, listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993 (as TLB), and marked its 50th anniversary in 1997 with $1 billion in sales.

The J. Jill acquisition of 2006 made Talbots a two-brand company, but the marriage ended in 2009 when J. Jill was sold - J. Jill trades today as its own company, linked from this profile's references. Talbots itself left the public market on August 7, 2012, when Sycamore Partners completed its acquisition at a value of approximately $391 million including net debt. It remains a Sycamore company: a private, women-led classic brand headquartered in Hingham, selling through several hundred stores, its catalog and talbots.com - the red door, updated for an omnichannel age.
