Assouline is pleased to present Akris, a brand that truly exemplifies refined, luxurious minimalism, by Valerie Steele.
In his work for Akris, designer Albert Kriemler has created fashion that is characterized by a tactile sensuality of materials that enhances a woman's awareness of her physical being while also providing visual allure in the form of a sleek, dynamic style. The streamlined look of Akris fashion is designed to enhance the body, and also to provide psychological strength and energy through a feeling of effortless "just-rightness." It is fashion for the individual, modern woman.
Known for its sleek, minimalist approach to luxury—through the use of ultra-thin, natural-fiber fabrics, traditional couture methods, innovative high technology, and modern graphic patterns—Akris has been in business for nearly a century. Based in St. Gallen, a Swiss monastery town known as Embroidery City, the label maintains a balance of European refinement and international flair. Often referencing artists and architects like Yves Klein and Egon Schiele in his work, designer Albert Kriemler has attracted a loyal clientele including personalities as diverse as Condoleezza Rice, Angelina Jolie, and Princess Charlene, Monaco.
Founded by Albert Kriemler's grandmother in 1922 with polka-dot aprons made on her home sewing machine, and taken over in 1944 by Kriemler's father, who introduced ready-to-wear and designed for Givenchy, the house of Akris has stayed true to its generation-spanning traditions of focused craftsmanship and transcendent separates. From showstopping runway imagery to behind-the-scenes studio shots, artist sketches, and the paintings that informed some of Akris's most notable collections, this cloth-bound hardcover encapsulates the brand's singular aesthetic.
Valerie Steele (PhD, Yale University) is director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT). Having curated more than twenty exhibitions in the past ten years, Dr. Steele also serves as editor in chief of Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture, which she founded in 1997. She has appeared on many television shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show. The Washington Post describes her as one of "fashion's brainiest women," and she was included in the New York Daily News list of Fashion's 50 Most Powerful.
Akris is available for purchase at ASSOULINE boutiques worldwide and through www.assouline.com.
