Composed of some 13,670 islands, Indonesia extends approximately 3,200 miles (5,100 km) from the island of Sumatra in the west to that of New Guinea in the east, and about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from north to south. Its area is 741,052 square miles (1,919,317 square km), its capital is Jakarta, and its official language is Bahasa.
