  Berkeley College: Berkeley College, founded in 1931, offers Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in Fashion Merchandising and Management at its New York City campus, covering the business side of the fashion industry from product development to retail.

  Fashion Institute of Technology : The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is a State University of New York college of art and design located in New York City, New York, United States. It was founded in 1944. In 1951, it became one of the first SUNY community colleges empowered to grant the Associate of Applied Science degree. Today, FIT also grants Bachelor's and Master's degrees in fashion and related fields. These include some unique programs, such as the United States' only degree-granting program in Accessories Design, and the only baccalaureate program in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing in the world.

Design School or Business School? New York Has Both

New York's fashion education splits cleanly, and choosing your side matters more than choosing a name. Design education — FIT's art and design degrees are the public flagship — trains pattern, construction and collection development. Fashion business education, such as Berkeley College's Fashion Merchandising and Management degrees, covers the industry from product development to retail: buying, marketing, management. FIT itself grants degrees on both sides, as a SUNY college that began in 1944, became one of the first SUNY community colleges empowered to grant the Associate of Applied Science degree in 1951, and today also grants bachelor's and master's degrees.

Using the City While You Study

The New York premium is access: internships during term, part-time showroom and retail work, guest speakers who employ graduates, and a garment district where fabric, trim and sample services still cluster. Ask each school how internships are placed, whether they are for credit, and what share of students intern before graduating. Then be realistic about cost of living — New York study rewards students who work in the industry while they learn, both for income and for the network that becomes their first job.
