Factory Evaluation and Visit Checklist

What to ask, what to look for and how to compare factories, whether you visit in person or by video.

By Apparel Search · Updated October 2026

A visit, or even a video tour, tells you things a quote cannot. This checklist helps you prepare, notice the right things and compare factories fairly afterward. It is a buyer's checklist for your own evaluation, and not a formal compliance audit. Read how to find a clothing manufacturer for the full process.

Before the visit

Do your homework so the time counts.

Capability

Can they actually make your product?

What to look for on site

Observe, and take notes and photos where allowed.

  • This is your observation, not an audit.

Communication and terms

How they work with you matters as much as the machines.

After the visit

Compare while it is fresh.

Questions

Do I have to visit a factory in person?

Not always. A video tour, references and samples can tell you a lot, and a visit or a visit by a trusted representative adds more. Decide based on the size and importance of the order.

Is this a compliance audit?

No. It is a checklist for your own evaluation. Formal social and safety audits are done by qualified auditors.

What should I ask a factory first?

Ask what products they make, their minimums and lead times, how sampling works, what the price includes, and for references from other clients.
