Graphics for the Garment Industry

This is only a small sample of what the Apparel Search design staff is capable of creating. We specialize in graphics for the garment industry and have extensive knowledge of applications and production. From men’s to boy’s to women’s to girl’s, make Apparel Search your one stop shop for all of your graphic needs. The seven samples in the gallery below — dragon, flame, polo, soccer, character, construction and millennium artworks — were chosen to show spread rather than depth: creature graphics, biker flames, sport themes, licensed-character style work, workwear themes and commemorative art are different trades inside one studio, and a buyer of print work needs to know which of them a studio can actually draw.

Print design for clothing is production design, not illustration for its own sake. A graphic has to survive being separated into screens, printed at a set size on a moving garment, and washed for the life of the clothing. Knowledge of applications and production is what separates a garment print from a picture: line weights that hold in screen printing, color counts a printer can run profitably, repeats that join invisibly on an allover print and artwork sized for the chest, back or sleeve it will occupy. The studio’s print work sits alongside its Apparel Search Design Studio menswear page and the wider studio services, and companies planning production can continue to Production Guru for production and sourcing services.

Spot Prints and Allover Prints

The two families of garment print ask for different drawing. A spot print is a single placed graphic — the dragon or the flame — composed for one position on one garment, judged the way a poster is judged. An allover print is a repeating pattern that covers the fabric itself, composed as a tile whose edges must disappear, judged the way a textile is judged. Studios often do one well and the other badly, because the skills differ: spot work rewards boldness, allover work rewards patience and mathematics. A sample set that shows both families, as this one does across its seven pieces, is the quickest evidence that a studio can serve a whole line rather than a single tee.

Choosing between them starts with the garment and the market. A boy’s tee can carry a large spot graphic that would overwhelm a women’s fashion top; a millennium or event graphic has a selling season measured in months, while a good allover floral or geometric can run for years across many garment types. The brief for print work should name the garment, the print position, the approximate size, the number of print colors the budget allows and the delivery date — the same discipline the Pricing Request Form page describes for design work generally, applied to the print studio’s specific questions.

What is the difference between a spot print and an allover print?

A spot print is one placed graphic, composed for a single position on a garment. An allover print is a repeating pattern that covers the fabric, composed as a tile whose edges must join invisibly. The drawing skills differ: spot work rewards boldness, allover work rewards patience and precision.

Who owns the artwork in the samples?

The companies represented in the artwork own their logos and related indicia. The samples are actual work created by the studio's art staff for those companies or their licensees, and the studio claims no ownership or right of any kind in the artwork shown.
