A bell sleeve is a sleeve that fits the shoulder and upper arm and then flares out — from the elbow, or sometimes from mid-arm — into a wide, open, bell-shaped hem at the wrist. The flare is cut into the sleeve's shape (or added as a flared section), not gathered, so it swings and flows as the arm moves. Bell sleeves are forever linked with 1960s and 1970s style, and they return whenever fashion turns bohemian or retro.
Cutting the Flare
A bell sleeve begins as an ordinary fitted sleeve; the bell is created by slashing and spreading the lower pattern piece, or by joining a separately cut flared section at the elbow seam. The amount of flare decides the personality — a small flare gives a gentle 'trumpet' opening (the close relative called a trumpet sleeve), while a full bell sweeps wide enough to need care around food, candles, and door handles.
Because the hem is a wide curve cut partly on the bias, it is usually finished with a facing or a narrow hem that follows the curve without pulling it out of shape.
Bell Sleeves Through the Decades
- Medieval and Renaissance dress — hanging, bell-like sleeves on gowns and houppelandes are the distant ancestors.
- 1960s–70s — the bell sleeve in its modern form, on dresses, peasant blouses, and knit tops.
- Contemporary revivals — from modest flares on work blouses to dramatic tiered, ruffled bells that stack two flares in one sleeve.
FAQs
- What is the difference between a bell sleeve and a flared sleeve?
- 'Flared sleeve' is the general term; a bell sleeve is the specific version fitted at the top and opening into a bell at the wrist — most flared sleeves sold today are bell sleeves.
- Are bell sleeves practical?
- Small flares are easy to wear. Wide bells swing into everything — roll them back for eating and keep them from open flames; historically, wide sleeves were a display of not having to work with your hands.
- What is a trumpet sleeve?
- A close relative with a smaller, straighter flare that begins lower on the arm, shaped like a trumpet's bell rather than a full church bell.
