GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading certification for organic textiles. It verifies that a textile product is made with organic fibers and processed to strict environmental and social standards throughout the supply chain.
What GOTS Covers
GOTS goes beyond "made with organic cotton." It certifies the entire chain: fiber production, spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing, and manufacturing. Chemical inputs are restricted, wastewater must be treated, and social criteria (no child labor, fair wages, safe conditions) are audited.
Two Label Grades
- "Organic": at least 95% certified organic fibers
- "Made with organic": at least 70% certified organic fibers
Why Brands Pursue GOTS
It's the most recognized organic textile certification globally. For brands making organic claims, GOTS provides third-party credibility that self-declared "organic" labels can't match. Retailers increasingly require it.
FAQs
- Is GOTS the same as 'organic cotton'?
- No. 'Organic cotton' describes the fiber; GOTS certifies the fiber plus everything done to it afterward. A GOTS garment is organic from farm to finished piece.
- How much does GOTS certification cost?
- Varies by certifier and operation size, but expect annual audit fees. Many brands find the market access justifies the cost.
- Can a brand use the GOTS logo without certification?
- No. Every company in the supply chain - including the brand - must be GOTS certified to use the label.
