The Company Description of Its Time

The historical profile of The Bon-Ton Stores opens with an Important Note, and this rebuild keeps it at the top where the company record put it: Bon-Ton Stores filed for Chapter 11 in February 2018. It was later determined that they would be closing the stores. Great American Group and Tiger Capital Group acquired Bon-Ton's assets through a court-supervised bankruptcy auction in April. Court records indicated that liquidation sales would run through Aug. 31, 2018, with individual stores' closing dates varying depending on how much merchandise remained. Bon-Ton employed more than 700 workers at its corporate offices on Wisconsin Avenue, where it also ran a store under the Boston Store nameplate; in other parts of the state and country the chain operated around 200 stores under banners such as Younkers, Herberger's, Carson's, Bon-Ton and Elder-Beerman. Everything after that note in the original is labeled historical, and it stays labeled historical here.

The Hometown Store Model

Founded in 1898, Bon-Ton called itself the 'hometown' store, with seven department store brands in 25 Northeast, Midwest and upper Great Plains states (the wider count the historical section gives), offering fashion merchandise for the family and home at compelling prices, plus cosmetics and fine jewelry. The model's logic is in the nameplates: rather than renaming every acquired store Bon-Ton, the company kept the local names its communities already trusted - Boston Store in Milwaukee, Carson's around Chicago, Younkers, Herberger's, Elder-Beerman, Bergner's - and ran them as one dominant omni-channel retailer in the small to mid-size communities it served, with unique and limited-distribution merchandise and competitively priced national and private brands tailored to local lifestyle needs.

The dated snapshots the original preserves measure the last years: in August 2014 the company operated 272 stores, including 10 furniture galleries, in 25 states under the same seven nameplates; fiscal 2013 generated $2.8 billion in sales; and a leadership note records Kathryn Bufano named CEO at Bon-Ton in August 2014. Set beside the February 2018 count of 256 stores in 23 states, the sequence shows the estate shrinking toward the filing - which is precisely why this directory keeps dated snapshots unmerged: the trend is information, and averaging the figures would destroy it.
