The response was collective, in keeping with the town's co-operative tradition. Different co-operative organisations from Ichalkaranji came together under the leadership of Mr. K.B. Awade (Ex. M.P.) to form an educational society in 1981, to start institutes and colleges catering to education in textiles, engineering, management, medicine and other fields, providing education facilities to students of this rural area of the western region of Maharashtra State and supporting industry growth with technically qualified professionals. The society was named after Late Shri Dattajirao Kadam, an ardent social worker and veteran co-operator of the town, with wholehearted support from Ichalkaranji Municipality and generous local citizens - the naming is preserved here because it is the DKTE initials themselves: Dattajirao Kadam's Textile and Engineering institute, under his education society.
