Etsy is a marketplace where people around the world connect, both online and offline, to make, sell and buy unique goods.

Etsy LogoEtsy was founded in June 2005 in an apartment in Brooklyn, New York to fill a need for an online community where crafters, artists and makers could sell their handmade and vintage goods and craft supplies.  In the spirit of handmade, founder Rob Kalin and two friends designed the first site, wrote the code, assembled the servers and spliced the cables to get Etsy up and running.

In 2008, Chad Dickerson joined Etsy as its first CTO, and created the company’s foundational engineering culture, treating “Code as Craft”.  Chad became CEO in 2011 and began championing the “reimagination of commerce,” a transformation of every aspect of how goods are made, bought and sold.  Under Chad's leadership, the website that began in an apartment in Brooklyn has evolved into a sophisticated technology platform that connects Etsy sellers and buyers across borders, languages and devices, a company that spans the globe and a business that is committed to creating lasting change in the world.

On March 3, 2015, Etsy announced that it had filed for a $100 million IPO.

In May 2017, the company's board replaced Chad Dickerson as CEO with Josh Silverman, citing pressure from shareholders and poor profits.

As of December 31, 2018, Etsy had over 60 million items in its marketplace, and the online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods connected 2.1 million sellers with 39.4 million buyers.

On June 2, 2021, Etsy announced that it had agreed to acquire shopping app Depop for $1.63 billion.

The heart and soul of Etsy is their global community: the creative entrepreneurs who use Etsy to sell what they make or curate, the shoppers looking for things they can’t find anywhere else, the manufacturers who partner with Etsy sellers to help them grow, and the Etsy employees who maintain and nurture the Etsy marketplace.

Etsy's main office is in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and it has hosted open crafting classes in the "Etsy Labs".[29] The site's technology, customer support, marketing, PR, business, and communications teams operate out of this office. Etsy Labs has a workspace that provides equipment and donated materials, where members gather to make items, take and teach workshops, and attend special events.

Here are a few primary reasons to utilize the Etsy shopping experience:

Discover handmade items, vintage goods and craft supplies you can’t find anywhere else.

Get curated recommendations tailored to your taste.

Find boutiques, craft fairs and flea markets where you can shop from Etsy sellers offline.

Etsy sellers range from hobbyists to professional merchants, and have a broad range of personal and professional goals. Some Etsy sellers just want some extra pocket money, while others depend on their shops to support themselves and their families.

Etsy has become very popular among crafters as well as consumers.
