The Company Description of Its Time

Fruit of the Loom is the oldest name in this letter by more than a century, and the historical record tells the founding with the details a trademark lawyer would keep: Fruit of the Loom was founded in 1851 by two brothers in Rhode Island, USA. The B.B and R. Knight Corporation opened its first mill and began producing quality cotton cloth and textiles. Five years later the Fruit of the Loom brand name was born, inspired by paintings of fruit created by the daughter of one of the company's customers. In 1871 Fruit of the Loom became official and was registered as trademark number 418. The filing's comparisons make the date vivid: this makes the company one of the world's oldest trademarks, older than Coca-Cola, the light bulb and even the humble paper bag. The historical record's history graphic is carried by reference in the gallery on the history page.

Berkshire Hathaway and the Acquisition Years

The modern ownership record is stated in one sentence: in 2002 Fruit of the Loom was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway Group, chaired by one of the world's most renowned businessmen, Mr Warren Buffett - being part of such an organisation provides financial security and a strong foundation on which the company can build for the future. Then the acquirer became an acquirer: more recently, Fruit of the Loom itself acquired the Russell Corporation, which includes famous global brands such as Russell Athletic, Spalding and Brooks; and the lingerie division of the VF Corporation, including the highly-acclaimed lingerie brand Vanity Fair, was also acquired in recent years. A Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary buying a corporation that owns Russell Athletic and Spalding is a consolidation fact worth filing carefully, and this page preserves it as the historical record states it.

The scale figure closes the profile: as a global company with over 28,000 employees worldwide, Fruit of the Loom is continuing to invest in its business and constantly expanding into new markets. The routes show the brand's place in the wider directory: the historical record linked the Russell Athletic profile in the R letter and the separate Fruit of the Loom brand pages filed for men's, women's and children's clothing in the Clothes Guide brands section - the same company, filed once here as a corporation and three times there as a clothing brand by audience. Those audience pages are the natural next step for a reader who came for products rather than history.
