The Company Description of Its Time

Luxottica Group is a leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of fashion, luxury, sports and performance eyewear. Its international expansion has developed its geographic footprint worldwide: the Group's global wholesale distribution network covers more than 150 countries, and it is complemented by an extensive retail network of approximately 9,000 stores. The named chains map the footprint - LensCrafters and Pearle Vision in North America, OPSM and Laubman & Pank in Australia and New Zealand, GMO and Oticas Carol in Latin America, Salmoiraghi & Vigano in Italy, and Sunglass Hut worldwide.

Proprietary Brands and Licensed Names

Among its core strengths, the record names a strong and well-balanced brand portfolio. The proprietary brands include Ray-Ban, one of the world's best-known eyewear brands; Oakley, one of the leading product design and sport performance brands globally; and Vogue Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette. Alongside the owned names, the Group licenses prestigious brands including Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Bulgari, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY, Ferrari, Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Paul Smith, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Starck Eyes, Tiffany & Co., Tory Burch, Valentino and Versace.

Owning some brands and licensing others balances two different risks. Proprietary brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley are permanent assets whose design, pricing and distribution the Group controls outright, while licensed fashion names bring the eyewear customer the labels they already buy in clothing and accessories, for the term of each licence. The list also shows the spread of the portfolio across the historical record's four territories - fashion, luxury, sports and performance - with Oakley carrying the sport side and names such as Persol and Oliver Peoples carrying the premium optical side. The historical record's photograph of Luxottica eyewear is carried in the gallery below.

The Vertically Integrated Model

One of the Group's competitive advantages, as recorded, is the vertically integrated business model built over the years, covering the entire value chain: design, product development, manufacturing, logistics and distribution. Product design, development and manufacturing take place in six manufacturing facilities in Italy, three facilities in China, one in Brazil and one facility in the United States devoted to sports and performance eyewear, with a small plant in India serving the local market. Luxottica has also produced sun and ophthalmic lenses for more than 20 years, and increased its manufacturing capacity with three new laboratories in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific, completely integrated with its logistics hubs.

The mission statement the historical record keeps is unusually personal for a manufacturer: to protect the eyes and enhance the look of women and men in the world, creating the best possible eyewear to satisfy its clients and to interpret consumer tastes and aspirations. The Group pursues that mission, it says, ethically and responsibly, keenly aware of how essential glasses are to well-being - allowing people to work, read and communicate their personal style, and to enjoy the beauty of life and of the world around them. The official Luxottica site is carried in the References, and the routes onward to sunglass retailers and to sunglasses in the product-influence section remain on this page.
