The Company Description of Its Time

The TJX Companies, Inc. is the leading off-price apparel and home fashions retailer in the U.S. and worldwide, with over $17 billion in revenues in 2006, eight businesses, and more than 2,400 stores. The full record filed here - the parent profile from which each of its chains' own pages in this letter is drawn - ranks TJX 133rd in the Fortune 500 of its day and states the off-price mission plainly: 'to deliver a rapidly changing assortment of quality, brand name merchandise at prices that are 20-60% less than department and specialty store regular prices, every day.' Its target customer is a middle to upper-middle income shopper, fashion and value conscious, who 'fits the same profile as a department store shopper' - with A.J. Wright reaching a more moderate-income market and Bob's Stores a moderate to upper-middle one.

From Eight Businesses and $17 Billion to Nearly 5,000 Stores

Two of the eight businesses in that record no longer exist as TJX chains, and their own profiles in this letter carry their endings: Bob's Stores was sold in 2008 and closed for good in July 2024, and A.J. Wright was wound up in early 2011, its stores converted to other TJX banners or closed. A ninth chain, Sierra, joined by acquisition in 2012. The rest compounded: TJX today operates 4,954 stores in nine countries (2024) - TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and HomeSense in the U.S., Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense in Canada, and TK Maxx and Homesense across Europe and Australia - with revenue of $54.2 billion in fiscal 2024.

The corporation itself is older than its name. TJX was organized as a Zayre Corp. subsidiary in 1987 and became the legal successor to Zayre in 1989, inheriting roots that run back through Marmaxx to 1919. It is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange as TJX - by market value, one of the largest apparel retailers on earth, built almost entirely on the 20-to-60-percent promise its 2006 profile states.
