Real-time visibility of the sewing floor: production, labor, WIP and incentive pay as they happen
Shop floor control (SFC) software tracks what is actually happening in a clothing factory while it happens. Each operation on each bundle of garments is recorded as it is completed, so production counts, work in process, operator performance and labor cost are known in real time — not reconstructed from paper tickets at the end of the week, when the delivery date has already been missed.
Apparel and sewn products manufacturers are challenged to improve quality and reduce work-in-process inventory at the same time as customers demand shorter lead times. SFC is the tool built for that squeeze: to eliminate delays and achieve on-time deliveries, factories must closely track, control and make their production processes transparent to customers and supply chain partners.

The data comes from the floor itself. Operators log work at terminals, tablets or scanning stations as bundles move between operations; the system accumulates production by style, operation and operator, compares it with the standard allowed minutes for the work, and shows supervisors the state of every line at a glance. Data collection methods range from real-time modular monitoring to real-time WIP (work in process) reporting, in systems offered in English, Spanish and Simplified Chinese for factories across the world's garment regions.
With that feed, management questions get immediate answers: which orders are behind, where the bottleneck operation is, what the plant's real capacity is this week, and which operators are earning their incentive. The system optimizes on-time completions, evaluates plant workload, determines capacity needs and tracks employee performance continuously rather than at payroll time.
Much garment sewing is paid by the piece, which makes payroll a calculation of thousands of recorded operations against rates and guarantees. SFC software calculates complex incentive payroll from the same data it collects for production — every bundle ticket already carries the operation, the rate and the operator — removing a weekly clerical burden and a perennial source of disputes on the floor.
Work in process is the other number SFC disciplines. Garments sitting between operations are money asleep; factories that can see WIP by line and style in real time can balance work before piles form, keeping throughput high and lead times honest. Machine downtime and other vital processes are tracked alongside, so the causes of lost production are recorded rather than remembered differently by every supervisor.
CGS offers Shop Floor Control within its BlueCherry enterprise suite for apparel. NGC's (New Generation Computing) configurable system provides real-time labor and production reporting throughout the entire factory network, with the incentive payroll and capacity functions described above. IQMS brings a visual front-end to plant floor performance inside its EnterpriseIQ manufacturing ERP, where shop floor control and ERP integration are designed to be plug and play. BYTE Software Services is also listed for apparel shop floor control; the specific page carried in this directory no longer responds, so that entry is kept unlinked.
Simparel SFC takes a newer route: it removes traditional infrastructure requirements and adopts Internet of Things technologies for the factory floor, using an Android app and Wi-Fi networking with off-the-shelf mobile devices to collect production data as it occurs and feed it back to workers and managers. By lowering the overall cost of ownership and simplifying deployment, it aims to give everyone from small contractors to major brands the real-time visibility that once required a major systems project. Software that records production on the factory floor in real time — each operation completed on each bundle — to track output, work in process, operator performance and labor cost as they happen, instead of reconstructing them from paper tickets at week's end.
Piece-rate pay is built from the same records production uses: every completed operation carries its rate and the operator who performed it. The system totals those records against guarantees and overtime rules to calculate complex incentive payroll automatically.
Production management runs the order book — orders, costing, materials, deliveries and invoices. Shop floor control runs the factory day: real-time operation-level production, labor and WIP inside the plant. The two are complementary and often integrated.
