Fabric & Textile Unit Converter

Convert fabric weights, lengths, widths and yarn counts, and estimate roll weights and rolls needed for an order.

Mills quote in grams per square meter, US buyers ask for ounces per square yard, and cutting rooms think in yards. This Apparel Search converter handles the math in one place. Type a value in any box and the others in that section update instantly. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is saved.

Please read: the conversions are exact, but real fabric is not. The math between units is exact. Actual fabric varies with fiber, finish, moisture, relaxation and normal mill tolerances, so a fabric quoted at 150 GSM will not weigh exactly 150 GSM everywhere. The roll and order results are estimates based on the numbers you enter. Confirm specifications, tolerances and quantities with your mill or supplier before ordering.

Fabric weight per area

Weight per length (uses the GSM above)

Roll and order estimator (uses the GSM and width above)

Use your own fabric consumption per piece, including the allowance your factory recommends. This tool does not estimate consumption for you.

Length and width

Yarn count

Tex, decitex and denier measure weight per length, so a higher number means a thicker yarn. Nm and Ne are the opposite, so a higher number means a finer yarn. Nm (metric count) is the number of meters of yarn in one gram. Ne (English cotton count) is the number of 840-yard lengths in one pound, so Ne 30 means 30 x 840 yards per pound. Ne is used for cotton yarn. Wool, worsted, linen and other systems use different bases, so they are not included.

Why these conversions matter

Constants used. 1 yard = 0.9144 meters exactly. 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams. 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms exactly. Tex is grams per 1,000 meters, denier is grams per 9,000 meters, Nm is meters per gram, and Ne (cotton) is the number of 840-yard hanks per pound. Roll weight is GSM times width times length, so it changes with the width you enter. It does not include the core, packaging or moisture.
