An Urban Brand Built Into Twelve Lines

Ecko's history is a case of a single urban clothing line becoming a brand system. Founded by designer Marc Ecko and popular from the late 1990s, the brand moved into the mainstream of urban culture in the early 2000s, and the growth was organised as separate lines rather than one ever-wider range: Ecko Unlimited for men and Ecko Red for women at the core, Eckō Function for outerwear and alternative sports, and then category lines — Marc Ecko Leather, watches, Scopes eyewear, Storage bags and accessories, and footwear for men, women and children. Zoo York carried the group into skateboarding, Marc Ecko Cut and Sew offered a more polished clothing line, and boys' and girls' versions of the two main lines stepped the customer down in age.

Two features of the record show how an urban brand of that period grew. The first is partnership: from 2003 to 2008 Ecko worked with the G-Unit Clothing Company, helping to market and merchandise that brand, until the joint deal folded in February 2008 — licensing and partnership arrangements let an established operator lend its production and retail machinery to a newer name. The second is placement: the promotional song Sneakernight was used to promote Ecko sneakers, and Ecko clothing began appearing in the mixed martial arts and boxing world, worn by fighters including Michael Bisping and Miguel Cotto, putting the brand in front of a young male audience outside fashion media entirely.
