The dresses, suits and children's outfits of Easter morning — and how to coordinate a whole family's colors for the photograph without putting everyone in the same outfit.

The main Easter outfits guide covers the day itself — the service, the table, the lawn, the weather. This companion goes inside the wardrobe: the dresses and suits people actually wear, what makes an Easter dress an Easter dress, how children's Easter clothes are built and bought, and the coordination method that makes a family look pulled together in the photograph while each person wears something of their own.
One principle runs through everything below: Easter clothes are spring clothes at their most formal, which makes them the hardest-working occasion clothes of the year. Buy them with the whole season in mind and almost nothing here is a one-day purchase.
For Women
The Easter dress is a specific and durable idea: a spring dress in a light color or floral print, at a length and coverage that suit a church morning, in a fabric with enough body to look dressed rather than summery. The silhouettes that return every year:
Fabrics do the seasonal work: cotton and cotton blends, crepe, light lace and eyelet, chiffon over lining. Sleeves solve two problems at once — the traditional-congregation shoulder question and the late-March chill of an early Easter like 2027's (March 28) — which is why the Easter dress so often arrives with a matching or contrasting cardigan sold as its partner. Our church dresses guide covers necklines, sleeves and fabrics for worship dressing in depth; Easter is simply its biggest day.
For Children
Children's Easter clothes are the most traditional corner of the children's wardrobe — garments whose styles change slowly and whose construction is worth understanding, because the good ones are bought to be worn, photographed, outgrown and handed down.
Girls' dresses. The classic forms are the smocked dress (hand- or machine-smocked bodice, gathered skirt), the A-line and party styles in floral prints, pastels and white, and the two-piece look of a dress with a white or pastel cardigan over it. Fabrics run to cotton, cotton blends and light taffeta for the dressiest versions; details to look for are soft finished seams (a dress worn for hours), a sash or smocking that gives with movement, and a hem with enough length for the egg hunt's bending and running. Tights or ankle socks and a pair of Mary Jane dress shoes complete the standard set. The children's Easter dress selection is stocked as its own category each spring — our children's Easter dresses retail guide covers where they are sold and what the styles are.
Buying notes. Size for the child as they are in late March, not as they were at Christmas — the two-to-three-weeks-ahead purchase (see the questions below) exists because spring growth spurts ruin January planning. Choose shoes that fasten securely and garments without scratchy trim at the neck or waist; an uncomfortable outfit comes off in stages all morning. And buy the cardigan: Easter photographs are full of girls in sleeveless dresses and goosebumps because the layer was left at home.
For Men & Boys
Men's Easter dressing is the spring suit idea at three levels of commitment. The full version is a suit in a light spring color — pale gray, light blue, tan or seersucker in the South — with a pastel or floral tie. The middle and most common version is a blazer (navy is the workhorse; light gray and tan are the spring choices) over chinos or dress trousers, with a button-down shirt in white, pale blue or a soft pastel. The lightest version keeps Sunday neat-casual: trousers, a good shirt, a sweater or unstructured jacket. Which level is right is the congregation-and-family question from the main guide — Easter at a dress-up church calls for the first; Easter brunch alone, the third will do.
Boys' Easter clothes mirror the men's in miniature as garments: a navy or light blazer, a button-down shirt, khaki or dress trousers, an optional clip-on or real tie, and loafers or dress shoes. Suit sets for boys are sold complete each spring (jacket, trousers, shirt, sometimes the tie) and are the practical route for a one-morning formality. As with the girls' clothes, fit on the day beats size on the tag: have him sit, reach and bend in it before the morning, because a boy at war with his collar will not smile for the photograph.
Together
The family photograph is Easter's closing ceremony, and it is where good intentions go to match too hard. Identical outfits photograph like a uniform; coordinated outfits photograph like a family. The method that works:
The fuller treatment of family photo dressing — what colors do on camera, what to avoid, how settings change the choices — is our family photo outfits guide. Easter applies the same logic with a spring palette and a deadline.
The Finish
No accessory belongs to a holiday the way the bonnet belongs to Easter. The tradition is centuries old — new clothes for spring, and a new hat to crown them, bought after Lent and debuted at the Easter service; our Easter bonnet definition traces the custom from church tradition to the Easter Parade. As garments, today's Easter bonnets for girls are soft fabric or straw hats with ribbons and floral trim, and women's spring hats run from straw boaters and wide brims to simple fascinators at the dressiest churches. The women's bonnets guide covers bonnet styles, fabrics and fit across the year.
The rest of the finishing kit is light and seasonal: a light scarf for the cold church porch, simple jewelry (Easter is a pearls-and-small-gold holiday more than a statement one), a bag big enough for the morning's extras, and — for whoever is hosting — the understanding that accessories come off as the day relaxes. Corsages and boutonnieres, once standard Easter wear, survive in some families and congregations; if yours is one of them, white or pastel flowers are the tradition.
After Easter
Easter clothes earn their price in the eight weeks after the holiday, because spring is a season of occasions and the Easter wardrobe is built for all of them. The spring dress goes to weddings, graduations, christenings and garden parties. The blazer works through every smart-casual event until summer. Girls' Easter dresses rotate through recitals, spring portraits, birthdays and family gatherings — and because they are worn gently and briefly, they hand down and resell at the top of the children's market.
Buy with that calendar in view and the arithmetic changes: a dress worn once is expensive at almost any price, and the same dress worn six times by June is a bargain at twice the ticket. This is the cost-per-wear logic our cost comparison fashion shopping guide applies to the whole wardrobe — Easter is simply its clearest spring example. Store the pieces hanging and clean after the season, and they are ready for the portrait and party calendar that follows Easter closely every year.
Pick one print — usually the dress with the strongest pattern — and pull two or three of its colors out for everyone else's solid pieces: a shirt in the print's blue, a cardigan in its pink, a tie in its green. Everyone matches the palette and nobody matches an outfit, which photographs better and lets each person wear something they genuinely like.
The classic girls' Easter outfit is a spring dress — floral prints, pastels and smocked or A-line styles are the long-running favorites — worn with a white or pastel cardigan against the morning chill, tights or ankle socks, and dress shoes such as Mary Janes. A bonnet or hair bow finishes the traditional look. Comfort decides how long it all stays on: soft seams, room to move and shoes that fasten well survive the egg hunt happiest.
Closer to the day than feels comfortable. Children grow in unpredictable inches, and a dress bought in January can be short by the end of March. Two to three weeks ahead balances growing room against the spring stock selling through, and leaves time for the shoe check — last year's dress shoes are the item most often outgrown.
Yes — that is the point of buying them well. A spring dress works for weddings, graduations, garden parties and spring portraits; a blazer pairs with different trousers all season; girls' Easter dresses have a long second life at recitals, birthdays and family photos, and outgrown occasion clothes hand down and resell better than almost any other children's clothing because they are worn so gently.
